ADHD/ADD neurodevelopmental disorders cause problems with attention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity.
Attention-deficit disorder (ADD) was the diagnosis given to children who struggled to pay attention. However, many children also display hyperactive and impulsive behaviors, so mental health experts combined the three characteristics into one condition: ADHD.
ADHD/ADD symptoms typically appear before the age of 12 but can go undiagnosed until adulthood. The Healed Mind Psychiatry team offers specialized care to children and adults who have ADHD/ADD and other impulse control disorders.
Impulse control disorders include:
These conditions cause challenging behaviors, including defiance, being argumentative, fighting, angry outbursts, and aggressiveness. Children and adolescents might break rules and laws, destroy property, steal, and lie.
Impulse control disorders develop during childhood but continue to cause problems into adulthood. The ongoing behaviors disrupt everyday functioning and adversely affect relationships.
Children with inattentive ADHD (ADD):
Children with hyperactive and impulsive ADHD symptoms are constantly on the go and continually restless, squirming in their seats at school, tapping their feet, and fidgeting. They may get out of their chair when they shouldn’t and run, climb, or play at inappropriate times.
Hyperactive children can’t stay quiet, talking excessively, blurting out answers before you ask the question, and struggling to wait their turn. They often interrupt or intrude on others’ games or conversations.
Those with ADHD/ADD also have a hard time regulating their mood and emotions. Some have additional mental health problems, such as mood disorders, anxiety, substance use disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
Not sure if it is ADHD/ADD?
QB Test is an FDA-approved objective testing for ADHD/ADD. No appointments needed and no wait times. Maximum time for adults (18yrs- 60 yrs) is 20 minutes. Maximum time for children ( 6 yrs - 17 yrs) is 11 minutes.
ADHD/ADD treatments include medications and psychotherapy. Stimulant medications boost brain chemical levels to improve attention and emotional regulation. If you don’t get help from stimulants, nonstimulant medications can also help some patients.
Psychotherapy (talking with a skilled counselor) focuses on the emotional and behavioral challenges of ADHD/ADD. To help you control your anger, improve your organizational and social skills, and successfully manage stress.
If you or your child struggle with ADHD/ADD, call The Healed Mind Psychiatry today or schedule an in-person or telehealth* appointment online.
